giving something back
We are passionate about giving back directly to the
people who are the custodians of the cultures and
amazing places that we visit.
Since 2000, World Expeditions’ global contribution
schemes and charity challenges gave back donations in
excess of one million US dollars to environmental,
community, health, welfare and education development
programs throughout the world. Our travellers are of
course always very supportive of our efforts and have
also contributed individually and generously to these and
similar causes.
community project travel
In 2005 we launched our Community Project Travel (CPT)
program, a unique “philanthropy” program that functions
as a ‘not-for-profit’ division of World Expeditions. The
program offers purposeful adventures for everyday
travellers, where the main objective is to improve the
infrastructure or the environment of communities in need
in a meaningful and sustainable way.
In consultation with our local operators from around the
world _ together with community leaders _ we identify
worthwhile community projects. In each case, the affected
community receives little or no government funding, and
coupled with the tough economic predicament of these
areas, makes our assistance essential.
It is important to us that the projects are sustainable, in
that the work is started and then completed by the time
participants leave the community, which results in both an
immediate and long-term tangible benefit.
Each project works on the basis of ten to sixteen
participants working for three to five days consecutively
alongside people from the community to complete the
project and then continues as part of a longer adventure
itinerary. A local project manager is appointed to oversee
the work. We have deliberately targeted projects which do
not require particular skills from the participants. Each
project is funded in part by the participants themselves,
with approximately 25% of a participant’s land payment
being directed to purchase the materials for the project,
wages of a local builder and costs to transport the
materials to to the village. The work can be as varied as
renovating a school, upgrading a medical facility, building
footbridges or improving water accessibility to the village.
We have also introduced conservation projects such as
clean up and river care programs.
In the past and in the future we plan to operate
Community Project Travel trips in Australia, Nepal, Peru,
India, Tanzania, Kenya, Vietnam, Cambodia, China and
Venezuela.
